+ What is The Brethren?
The Brethren is a Young Adult fantasy series, written by Amanda and shared here on Spirit Kid Network one chapter at a time. It is based in a fantasy world, not too unlike our own medieval period, where the differences between town and country, and rich and poor are stark. One group of people cross these cultural divides, however, and they are The Brethren.
The Brethren are men and women who have been blessed by the Gods and are able to manipulate the fabric of the world in order to heal, nurture, and support the people of their land. They are trained in large Abbeys, under the guidance of leaders in each field and their own personal Guardian. In return for this training, they offer themselves to a Life of Service, going wherever they are most needed.
We start our journey as our protagonist, Bethia, begins her training. She believes that adapting to the different culture of the capital city will be her biggest challenge, but she has no idea of the battle that is brewing within which she will play an integral part.
+ Why publish the story like this?
The story has been playing around in Amanda’s mind, like all good stories do, for some time and she eventually started to put pen to paper over half a decade ago. Progress practically stopped as she had a baby and focused on raising a child and balancing work and home life (never an easy challenge!) and it was only in 2016/2017 when she began thinking about it again.
Going back to the work, Amanda realised she had grown a lot as a writer and needed to rework the chapters she had already written, adding in more detail, taking out points of little relevance, and continuing the story to its conclusion. Whilst excited about the prospect, Amanda also knew that if she waited until it was completed it might be another 5 years before anyone ever read her work. And so she decided to publish as she went.
The idea of publishing one chapter at a time is both exciting and scary – the work is “out there” before it is complete, and there’s always the risk that the original idea may get lost within comments and criticism. But, and here’s the magical part, those same comments (and criticisms) could also make the book much stronger. And that’s a risk worth taking!
+ How will I know when new chapters are added?
Amanda is hoping to add a new chapter on as close to a monthly basis as possible, but she is well aware that life sometimes gets in the way! And so the best way to keep up with new chapters is either by subscribing to our newsletter, or following us on social media. We will send out an email to let you know when new resources are added to the site, including new chapters of the book. You’ll find links to each individual chapter both in the newsletter and on this page.
We join our protagonist, Bethia, at the end of a three day journey to reach the capital city and start her new life as a member of The Brethren. Her first glimpses of the city and the Abbey from the stagecoach window, as well as the conversation from her fellow passengers, hint at just how different her life is about to become.
After entering the Abbey and meeting Brother Devin, the charming Head of Entrants and Guardians, Bethia takes her place in the Chapel for her Dedication Ceremony.
It is here that she first meets her Guardian, Brother Carew. What will they think of each other, and how reliable are first impressions anyway?
